When NETheatre York brought Elf The Musical to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre over Christmas 2024, the city was swept up in festive joy. With every performance selling out, the production became one of York’s most talked-about Christmas events — and we were thrilled to add our own creative sparkle to the occasion.

Designing the Magic for NETheatre’s Elf The Musical
A Programme with Personality
Our task was to design and produce a show programme that reflected the show’s fun, festive energy. We wanted audiences to feel the Christmas spirit the moment the programme landed in their hands — and what better way to do that than with a playful twist?
The cover featured a precision-cut silhouette of Buddy the Elf, created using our Veloblade digital cutting machine. When opened, the inside page revealed a bright, full-colour image of Buddy himself - a design feature that delighted audiences and added a sense of depth and discovery. The result was more than just a programme; it was a keepsake worthy of the show’s warmth and humour.
Bringing Festive Cheer to Print
The Elf The Musical programme needed to match the production’s energy — vibrant, joyful, and bursting with Christmas spirit. Using bold red and green tones, cheerful typography, and a crisp finish on quality stock, we ensured every element echoed the magic on stage.
Our team worked closely with NETheatre to align design, layout, and finishing with the production’s visual style. The cutout cover, achieved through Veloblade’s precision technology, demonstrated how print innovation can elevate audience engagement. It’s those little design details that turn a simple item into a memorable experience.
A Sold-Out Success
As YorkMix wrote in their glowing review, NETheatre’s Elf The Musical was “a sparkle jolly twinkle jingley good time.” With a packed house across all dates, audiences were treated to a show full of charm, laughter, and Christmas spirit — from the moment they stepped into the twinkling foyer to the final curtain call.
The programme played its part in setting the tone: festive, polished, and full of personality. Just like Buddy himself, it radiated joy and enthusiasm — the perfect companion for a production that celebrated community, creativity, and Christmas cheer.
What’s Next: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
We’re thrilled to be working once again with NETheatre as they prepare to bring Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre from 22nd to 29th November 2025. Our team is currently in the final stages of designing the show programme and crafting the on-stage props — a project filled with colour, imagination, and a dash of pure chocolatey fun.
With over 2,000 tickets already sold, excitement is building fast for this golden-ticket event. Tickets are on sale now via the Joseph Rowntree Theatre website.
At Team Purple, we love projects that combine imagination and craftsmanship. Working with NETheatre to produce a piece that captured the show’s heart - and used cutting-edge print technology to do it - was pure joy.
Because when print and performance come together, the result is something truly unforgettable.
We create solutions better than you can imagine!
