Turning a Personal Biography into a Professionally Printed Book: "Her Story"

Preserving a Lifetime of Memories

  1. When Jane approached Team Purple with a deeply personal project, we knew this was more than just a print job. It was a celebration of a life, a legacy, and a gift that would be treasured for generations.

Written as a birthday present for her mother’s 70th, “Her Story So You’ll Know Yours: The Life of Pamela Guanaria (Nanny Pam)” began as a carefully crafted Word document, filled with heartfelt storytelling and a rich collection of family photographs.

The original plan was simple: print it as it was.

But we saw an opportunity to create something far more meaningful.

The Starting Point: A Story Worth Elevating

  1. The supplied document spanned an impressive 220 pages, packed with full colour imagery and personal reflections. While the content itself was beautifully written, the layout lacked structure, with chapters flowing directly into one another and no clear visual breaks.

Rather than altering a single word, our role was to respect the integrity of Jane’s writing while shaping it into something that felt considered, refined, and worthy of the story it held.

Design Approach: Respecting the Words, Enhancing the Experience

  1. Dom from our graphic design team took the lead, focusing entirely on presentation without touching the original text.

    Key improvements included:
      •  Introducing clear chapter opening pages to give the story rhythm and breathing space
      •  Refining margins and spacing for a more comfortable reading experience
      •  Ensuring imagery sat naturally within the pages, maintaining a consistent and balanced layout

One particularly special element was a handwritten journal entry from a family holiday. Rather than recreating it, we preserved it exactly as it was, using scanned artwork to keep its authenticity intact. These are the moments that give a book its soul.

A Cover That Feels Like a Real Book

  1. The transformation truly came together with the cover design.

Using a striking photograph of Pamela in her graduation gown, the front cover was designed to feel classic, personal, and timeless. Paired with Futura Bold typography, the result was clean, confident, and unmistakably book-like.

The finished piece moved far beyond its original format. It became something you would expect to find on a bookshelf, not a home printer.

Production Details: Crafted to Last

  1. To match the significance of the project, production was carefully considered:

    Format:
    B5 book
    Binding:
PUR bound for durability and longevity
    Pagination:
    220 pages
    Inner Pages:
120gsm uncoated, ideal for readability and a natural feel
    Cover:
300gsm uncoated with gloss lamination for protection and visual impact
    Print:
    Full colour throughout
    Quantity:
20 copies for close family and friends

The combination of uncoated stock and strong binding created a tactile, premium feel while ensuring the book will stand the test of time.

A Living Book: Designed to Continue the Story

  1. One of the most thoughtful additions came at the end of the book.

We included 20 blank lined pages, giving family members space to add their own memories, reflections, and stories. This simple addition turns the book from a finished piece into something ongoing. A shared family archive that continues to grow.

Why Projects Like This Matter

  1. With over 40 years of experience and backed by ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards, we understand that print is not just about ink on paper. It is about care, detail, and creating something that lasts.

This project is a perfect example of how thoughtful design and considered production can elevate something personal into something extraordinary.

Because when the story matters, the format should too.
